Since February, I have been taking a Kung Fu class.
When people learn this, the usual reaction is incredulity – followed by lots of questions. My favorite response was from my friend Shannon, who simply said, “That makes total sense. Seems like something that you always wanted. It’ll be good for you.” Thank you, Shannon – your response was refreshing, and makes me glad that someone knew this little twist in my personality.
At first glance, I might not seem like the type to become a kung fu master. That’s ok, many of the people don’t fit the mold, but are on the path toward becoming better and have tons of fun.
I enjoy the class. It inspires to me maintain a work-out schedule – fear of public humiliation can be a great motivator. I am developing self-discipline, and have learned so much.
Why Kung Fu, as opposed to other martial arts? Well, there are weapons, it is more aggressive than other martial arts, and is the combination of elements from other kinds. The real reason, though, is that two friends of mine were joining it, and things like this are much easier with companions. We started slow, going one day a week, but now we are raising the stakes, going to twice a week.
So, be nice and watch out! Pretty soon I will be able to completely kick your… butt.
Oh, and I still hate Jackie Chan, just like always.
Why the hate for Jackie Chan?
I love Kung Fu and I started out at roughly the same time as you. It has done wonders for me physically and mentally and does not go against my religion at all. I am learning Pak Hok Pai or White Crane Boxing. What style are you learning?
Shaolin Long Fist is the style.
And…I think we should rephrase “Pretty soon I will be able to completely kick your… butt” to something along the lines of “Pretty soon I will be able to completely PUNCH your… butt.”
Tee hee.
I’m so happy you joined Kung Fu! Tis more fun with the trio…we are fierce ladies (or at least wannabes).
Go groin slap!
Those groin moves make me wince. We have one that grabs for the groin then pulls away from the enemy with your other arm crossed over your grabbing arms forearm. I don’t think I need to explain the intended results =O I’m not sure I’d have the um… inner strength to pull it off in a fight. I don’t even really like learning moves like that. Once you start learning gung fu you quickly realize that is some serious stuff, it is not meant for play!!!
Actually my wife and my nephew (who lives with us) started taking gung fu at the same time as me. We are a wushu family! Lol. Shaolin long fist sounds interesting. I like learning the history of all the different forms but I am particularly in love with my white crane. It just feels so natural. Like an expression of myself.
Our pastor of our church is our instructor as well which makes it really cool since we are like family to him as well.
Anyhow keep posted about your adventures in wushu I like reading about others experiences in it!
P.S. Maybe take it easy on the groin slaps!!! =D
